Baobab Powder... OK, it has a cool name but what are the benefits?

Baobab Powder is a very interesting superfruit with many uses and a variety of benefits for your health. Grown in the semi-arid tropical regions of Malawi, our organic baobab powder is 100% organic, with nothing added or taken away.

What is Baobab Powder?

The Adansonia Digitata Baobab Tree, known locally as the ‘Tree of Life’, produces lovely fruit pods filled with baobab pulp which is then harvested and milled into our raw powder.

Baobab trees grow extremely fast when young and can live for a very long time indeed; the oldest recorded tree was dated to 1,275 years old!

These particular trees hold great cultural significance to the local people and felling of the baobab tree is generally discouraged due to traditional beliefs. The baobab is the national tree of both Senegal and Madagascar and it regularly appears on postage stamps due to its local importance. Historically, baobab fruit was known to the ancient Egyptians, and records show that baobab products were traded in the markets of Cairo during the 16th Century. Although almost every part of the tree has a use value, the most importance resource is the pulp!

Baobab fruit pods contain seeds set within the dry pulp and processing into our powder is a relatively straightforward process. The pods are cracked open and the pulp is separated from the seeds and shell. The pulp is then milled into a fine powder and packed for dispatch. Because the baobab fruit is naturally low in moisture (it is the only fruit in the world that dries on the branch), it does not need to be mechanically dried. This ensures that our powder is completely 'raw' and organic.

How Can I Use Baobab Powder?

If you’ve not tried baobab powder before, it’s worth giving it a go. It has an unusual yet pleasant taste and is reasonably sweet and citrusy. Some people refer to it tasting sherbet but without the sugar!

1 or 2 teaspoons of baobab powder works very well in superfood smoothies or green juices for an extra hit of vitamin C and fibre. You can also sprinkle it on your salad, breakfast cereal or porridge for a boost of natural, organic goodness to start your day. Also works well in citrus-based sauces or simply added to sparkling water.

Health Benefits of Baobab Powder

Baobab is a fantastic source of many vitamins and minerals including calcium, magnesium and vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C, as well as being a great source of fibre. The primary benefits of baobab powder are its high vitamin C content which has around six times more vitamin C than an orange, gram for gram! This is especially good for us because the human body cannot produce its own vitamin C and we need to rely on our diet to get our fill.

Similarly, baobab’s nutritional profile boasts high fibre content and contains more antioxidants than any other whole fruit.

Vitamin C – supports healthy teeth, skin and gums, immune function and aids in the absorption of iron.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) - plays an important role in maintaining a healthy nervous system.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) - fuels the body's main functions through energy production and processes amino acids and fats.

Vitamin B6 - stimulates co-enzymatic activity and protects the immune system, as well as having positive effects on metabolism, premenstrual syndrome and hormone control.

Calcium - helps build and maintain strong and healthy bones.

Fibre - lowers cholesterol levels, normalises bowel movements and aids in achieving healthy weight.

Antioxidants - benefit the body by neutralising and removing free radicals from the bloodstream.
